Tulum Wedding Photography, EL Pez Hotel – Amanda + Steve
A wonderful wedding of athletes! I mean, there seemed to be no one in this family that did not fly-fish, was an athlete, a medal cyclist or conducted a sports show. I was happy to have the honour of doing Amanda & Steve’s wedding photography in Tulum’s El Pez hotel. Being a witness to details like a “Marry Me?”note on the mirror written in lipstick on the grooms bedroom, or to the arch of fishing rods that escorted the newlyweds as the friend ceremony ended, or watching Amanda’s father near her handling calls, moved, happy, was very dear to me. The bride & groom were not in a Colorado canyon river as Bighorn Sheep, a reservoir as Blue Mesa, or a lake like Trappers, but in our Caribbean, yet they certainly got their “catch of the day”! I wish them a life full of gifts as symbolised by the piñata they had at their reception.
Una maravillosa boda de … atletas! Quiero decir, no había al parecer nadie en esta familia que no hiciera pesca deportiva, fuera un atleta, un ciclista galardonado o un comentarista de deportes! Me dio gusto hacer la fotografía de bodas de Amanda y Steve en el hotel El Pez en Tulum. Ser testigo detrás del lente de detalles íntimos como un “Te casas conmigo?” escrito con lápiz labial sobre le espejo de la recámara del novio, o del arco de cañas de pescar que escoltó a los novios al terminar su ceremonia que ofició un amigo o notar a un padre de Amanda emocionado, feliz y pendiente de las llamadas de felicitación a su hija. Los novios no estaban en Bighorn sheep en el cañon de Colorado, en la reservase Blue Mesa ni tampoco en el lago Trappers, sino que en mar Caribe, y aún así obtuvieron su “pesca del día”! Les deseo una vida llena de regalos como lo simbolizó la piñata que partieron en su recepción.

Joy! This is the word that came to me as I did Caro and Jack’s wedding photographs and that keeps coming to mind as I watch them over. It’s joy and open smiles offering frank to each one other. Such an amiable couple and a lovely Maya ceremony by the beach. In all, a wedding in intimacy kept for the bride, the groom, friends and family that attended such a day of rejoicing, in a private white villa with shades of blue and a magnificent staircase of just the right name: “El Secreto”, near Playa del Carmen, in our Mexican Caribbean waters dream of a destination.
Júbilo! Esta es la palabra que mejor describe para mi las fotografías de boda de la sesión de Caro y Jack, cuando las miro de nuevo. Júbilo y sonrisas francas con las que los novios se ofrecían uno a otro. Una pareja de trato fácil y amigable en una bonita ceremonia Maya en la playa. En suma una boda hermosa en la intimidad de los novios, familiares y amigos que resguardó la casa blanca con detalles azules y majestuosa escalera con el adecuado nombre “Villa El Secreto” a unos minutos de Playa del Carmen, a orillas de nuestro Caribe mexicano, destino turístico de ensueño.

Playa del Carmen Wedding Photographer – Blue Venado Weddings – Kacey + Jordan
It may have been the sand. Yes, our white super fine sand in the beaches along our Caribbean coast upon which they stood days before, or that in the sand ceremony that saw Kacey & Jordan getting married. Fact is, they came to witness a friend’s wedding and decided to take that step as well! That’s my definition of braveness, what a wonderful way to do it! And me? I was the lucky one that did their wedding photography at Blue Venado hotel. Wonderful light and a couple so much in love with deeply felt vows plus an unsurmountable location. It was a swift yet unforgettable session! I will remember it.
Pudo ser la arena. Sí, la arena blanca, fina como el talco, de las playas de nuestro Caribe mexicano sobre las que caminaron los días anteriores, o a la mejor fue la arena dentro de las copas de la misma ceremonia que sirvió para que Kacey & Jordan se casaran. Vinieron a la boda de unos amigos y decidieron dar ese paso ellos también; mi definición de valentía! Que linda manera de hacerlo ¿Y Yo? Yo era el fotógrafo de boas suertudo que estaba tomando las fotos en el Hotel Blue Venado donde se celebró. Inmejorable luz y una pareja enamorada que sintió muy hondo los votos que se profesaron, en una locación inmejorable. Fue una sesión breve pero inolvidable.

Playa del Carmen Wedding Photographer – Xcaret Wedding – Lorena + Kubechi
It was a pristine day. Inside the little 1587 chapel of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, right in Playa del Carmen, Lorena and Kubechi were getting married and I was doing their wedding photography. They came all the way from the north border state of Tamaulipas, as most of their friends, family and the family priest. The chapel has a wonderful window behind the altar, so it is a bit challenging to expose, specially afternoons. It was a very happy wedding celebration, respectfully relaxed more like a family gathering. That same afternoon Lorena & Kubechi had a beautiful sand ceremony near the XCaret archaeological site, by the sea. Made me think of how the Chilam Balam, the many books Maya account of Maya history, describes XCaret as a place where two linages came together by weddings, as a place of pilgrimage and as a port to embark for Cuzamil (now Cozumel) to worship the deity of fertility, IxChel. I took it there was no other place more blessed for Lorena & Kubechi to get married in.
Era un día prístino. Al interior de la pequeña capilla de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (de 1578), en pleno Playa del Carmen, Lorena y Kubechi contraían matrimonio, mientras yo hacía su fotografía de bodas. Los novios, amigos, familia y el padre que ofició vinieron desde Tamaulipas en el norte del país. La capilla tiene una maravillosa ventana detrás del altar, por lo que hay que exponer con cuidado especialmente por las tardes. Fue una ceremonia alegre y respetuosamente relajada en un ambiente más de reunión familiar. Esa misma tarde, Lorena y Kubechi intercambiaron votos en una segunda ceremonia, esta vez de arena, sobre la playa junto a la zona arqueológica de XCaret. Me hizo pensar en como el Chilam Balam, recuento Maya de varios volúmenes hecho por ellos mismos sobre su historia, habla de XCaret (antes Polé) como un lugar donde dos linajes se unieron por matrimonio, o un destino de peregrinación. También como un puerto de embarque para Cozumel (antes Cuzamil) adonde se adoraba a IxChel diosa de la fertilidad y de la Luna ¿Que otro lugar más bendecido para la boda de Lorena y Kubechi?

Tulum Wedding Photographer – Bridal Session – Lorena
Lorena’s was a good bridal session in Tulum, with a challenge for a photographer like me: The bride wore the wedding dress she was going to use the next day at the ceremony, so I could not ask her to do many things to avoid getting a stain on it. We used instead Lorena’s natural poses and her red hair movement to produce the shots. She then changed into something more comfortable to complete the shooting with by the water photos. Again seagulls and wind were actively present and so were good old clouds that softened the shadows.
La sesión de fotografía de novia con Lorena en Tulum fue muy buena, con el reto adicional de que usó para la ocasión el vestido de bodas que emplearía al día siguiente en la ceremonia, así es que no podía pedirle cosas que arriesgaran a tener una mancha. Utilizamos las poses naturales de Lorena y el movimiento de su cabello largo y pelirrojo. La novia se cambio después aun vestido cómodo con el que terminamos la sesión a la orilla del mar. De nuevo, las gaviotas y el viento estuvieron muy presentes, como mis viejas amigas las nubes que suavizaron las sombras.

Tulum Wedding Photographer – Las Ranitas Hotel – Mayo + Kevin
A beautiful afternoon beach wedding by the Caribbean waters of Tulum, that of Mayo and Kevin, on a splendid light and weather. They ate, prayed and were married, just as their invitation read. Friends and family had to leave their shoes behind and indeed deep their toes in the white sand to get to the intimate Christian ceremony that saw them marry in so much love. Mayo kept being her daddy’s little girl, as a couple of fine details read to him, that’s for sure. The evening reception was so nicely decorated with bulb light garlands, backlit orchids and warm lanterns that lent for a special atmosphere, as evening lead to a lively beach party night.
La boda de Mayo y Kevin fur una increíble boda de playa por la tarde, a la orilla del mar Caribe en Tulum y en una luz y clima maravillosos. Comieron, rezaron y se casaron, tal y como leía su invitación. Amigos y familiares se descalzaron y sumergieron los dedos del pie en la arena blanca de nuestras playas, para asistir a la ceremonia cristiana que los unión en matrimonio y los vio en sincero amor. Mayo siguió siendo la pequeña de su padre, como leía en un par de detalles de la boda misma. La recepción por la noche nos dio una atmósfera especial de luz cálida a base de guirnaldas de bulbos, farolas y orquídeas en agua que condijo a la fiesta en la playa más tarde.

Underwater Trash the Dress Photographer – Tulum – Riviera Maya Cenotes – Mayo + Kevin
A glowing just married couple Mayo and Kevin dived gladly into the cenote as we started to shoot their underwater trash the dress photography session, their bodies suspended by zillion tiny bubbles, as if angels on clouds. Once underwater they danced very well together into position. Their eyes mostly shut added to the dreamlike feeling of the photos. A distance shot reminded me again of a forest scene at dawn, with frost evaporating around our characters as it warmed up… swirling sand and light beams can create such a fantasy. A wonderful session.
Como una deslumbrante pareja de recién casados, Mayo y Kevin se aventaron con ganas al cenote, para comenzar la sesión de underwater trash-the-dress. Desde abajo pude captar los millones de burbujas en los que quedaron suspendidos por un momento, cual ángeles en las nubes. Bajo el agua danzaron bien juntos, sus ojos cerrados la mayor parte del tiempo agregó a lo onírico de las fotos. Una de las tomas a distancia me parece ahora que la veo, como un pasaje en medio del bosque, con la escarcha que se evapora al amanecer alrededor de nuestra pareja sentados que parece decirse un secreto rápido al oído, mientras se mantiene a la expectativa de lo que pueda acontecer … una fantasía creada por el fondo de arena revuelto y luces. Una excelente sesión.

Tulum Wedding Photographer – La Zebra Hotel Wedding – Kelly + Joe
A fabulous wedding Kelly and Joe’s at La Zebra Hotel’s beautiful beach and deck and Lina’s cooking. We really connected when we met for their Tulum wedding photography sessions which were great and playful. Kelly and Joe had met in MySpace ten years before and were now in this magical portal of Tulum, getting married in a friend ceremony with family and friends, touched, in love and full of witty thoughts (Kelly on E.L.James’ “50 shades of Grey” and Joe on Stephenie Meyer’s “ Twilight”) shared to the laughter of guests, as it could not have been less expected of such a creative, screenwriting and production happy bunch. But the flair of Hollywood was ever present during the wedding, as I look back on the retro-chain watches photo, that makes me think of a more intergalactic “beam me up Scottie” scene, or the wonderful perspective on Joe’s pose and his best men jumping, which send me back to any superheroes squad poster of a movie. At their evening reception, when the party was wild, bride and groom got Gan Gnam style. I really had fun working for Kelly and Joe!
Una boda fabulosa la de Kelly y Joe en la playa y terraza del Hotel la Zebra, con el catering de Lina’s. Conectamos muy bien cuando nos conocimos en Tulum para acordar la fotografía de bodas que les hice. Sus sesiones fueron geniales y disfruté mucho trabajar con ellos. Kelly y Joe se conocieron por MySpace hace 10 años y ahora estaban el día de su boda aquí en este portal mágico que es Tulum, casándose en una ceremonia conducida por un buen amigo y en compañía de sus familias y amigos. Emotivos, enamorados y llenos de humor sagaz (Kelly ironizó de “ y Joe satirizó la novela “Crepúsculo”) que compartieron para las carcajadas de los invitados, como era de mínimo esperar de una banda creativa y de producción del mundo de las películas. Pero el aire de Hollywood continuó todo el día, como miro en las foto de los relojes de cadena que más parece una escena intergaláctica del capitán Kirk diciendo “Scottie, ¡transportador!”, o en la pose de Joe con sus padrinos de boda saltando detrás, que bien podría ser el poster de cualquier película de una cuadrilla de superhéroes. En la recepción por la noche, ya con la fiesta en marcha, novia y novio se pusieron a tono con Gan Gnam Style!

Far from Ellan Vannin, Kingdom of the Isles, came Amy and Gary, across the Lir, through the protecting cloak of mist of Manannán mac Lir son of the Sea that guards the Isle safe. She, the beautiful bride of a golden fair hair, a Fairy Queen herself, and her groom Gary came to this white paradise of Tulum to be married still by a sea, but of emeralds. In a merry ceremony under a beautiful sun and clean deep blue skies, a day brighter than many Manx people have in midsummer for Manannán offerings, saw them unite, as I had the pleasure of doing their wedding photography. May Amy and Gary be merry always and keep their magic cup intact.
Lejos de Ellan Vannin, del Reino de las Islas, vinieron Amy y Gary, por mar, cruzando primero el manto de niebla protector con el que Manann’an mac Lir, hijo del dios del Mar, envuelve la isla. Ella, la hermosa novia de cabellera dorada y cabello abundante, una Reina Hada, y su novia Gary vinieron a este paraíso de Tulum a casarse junto a un mar de esmeraldas.. En una ceremonia feliz, bajo el cielo azul profundo y los rayos de un sol resplandeciente, en un día más brillante que aquellos en que la gente de Manx ofrenda a Manannán en verano, se unieron mientras yo tuve le placer de hacer sus fotografías de boda. Larga y feliz vida a los novios! Que conserven siempre su taza mágica intacta.

Tulum Wedding Photographer – Al Cielo Hotel – Mallory + Phillipe
Mallory and Phillipe’s wedding in Tulum was a happy and so very moving photography session for me, in its symbolism and in what went. Mallory gave Phillipe a photo of his dear parents to be remembered as they were. Phillipe’s brother watched over his shoulder, as this strong, tall, martial arts expert of a man, was completely moved by the gesture. It was a pleasure meeting them. Mallory was so straightforward and sensitive and wore a beautiful wedding dress. They were again so touched during the ceremony and then laughter came rushing in. Such a beautiful couple, he came out so loving and proud as the ceremony ended and the afternoon gave way to a joyous family reception.
La boda de Mallory y Phillipe en Tulum, fue algo emotivo para mi tanto por su simbolismo como por lo que aconteció. Mallory le regaló a Phillipe una foto en la que aparecen los padres de él como fueron en vida. Este hombre, alto, erguido, fuerte y experto en artes marciales se detuvo en un sólo gesto emotivo, profundo, mientras su hermano le miraba por sobre el hombro. Fue un gusto conocerles. Mallory fue encantadora y sencilla desde el primer momento. Su vestido de novia era maravilloso. En la ceremonia de nuevo afloraron los sentimientos hasta que la risa a carcajadas rescatara a todos. Una linda pareja de la mano, él enamorado y orgulloso del momento, salió de la ceremonia al terminar la tarde y dar paso a una alegre recepción esa noche.

Underwater + Beach – Trash the Dress – Sofia + Bertrand – Riviera maya – Tulum
Underwater, Sofia is a ballet dancer in mid air, motion-stopped, sublime. In another take she is walking the high wire, dressed in white walking on red, as she starts a married couple life and holds the sign “Bride” in her hand. I just did my job and took the photo of this wonderful instants of the trash-the-dress session. Meantime, Bertrand has gotten into character. He is absolutely blown away, ecstatic, thrilled as if he had stricken gold, diving as a mighty moustache strong-man character, moustache cuff links on and all. We had a blast!
Bajo el agua en el cenote, Sofía era una bailarina de ballet, suspendida en el aire, sublime. En otra de las tomas la ella camina de blanco sobre la roja cuerda floja, emprendiendo su camino de pareja recién casada con su letrero de “Bride” en la mano. Con toda esta magia, yo sólo hice mi trabajo y tomé la fotografía de su sesión underwater trash-the-dress. Mientras tanto, Bertrand se había metido en carácter. Estaba extasiado, lleno de vitalidad. Buceaba de un lado a otro con la energía de un hombre fuerte musculoso y de mostachos, como en los circos, con todo y que los mostachos estaban en sus mancuernas! Nos divertimos en grande!

Playa del Carmen Wedding Photographer – Sofia + Bertrand + Grand Coral Beach Club
The minute I met Sofia and Bertrand I had to get these sessions 100% right, meaning they knew what they wanted and I had to deliver flawlessly. Think I did, but on top of that I had a wonderful time making their wedding photography in a most superbly organised wedding of fine taste, filled with wonderful details, including their own catering service, in-house cigar making, cold tequila shots carts, and much more, all amusing to our senses. My “Like” to it all, as a very happy Bertrand would put it in Web parlance. In my trade I get to be a sort of what in German is referred to a kamerling, that is of an allowed presence within a royal chamber to witness, accompany and listen to the king or queen. In this moments of intimacy, preparation and reflection minutes from getting married, that is what I turn into, and that is what I also get to see and photograph dearly; a kamerling in a chamber holding your secrets in my hand inside another smaller chamber – a camera obscura – to be preserved and presented to you later upon your will. Not your regular Henri Cartir-Bresson’s “fly on the wall” guy. Such was the feeling I got while with Sofia the bride queen, as I made photos of her astounding wedding dresses, her moments of concentration and reflection, those to ease natural tension and those of beautiful but dreading expectation, until everything in holy marriage gets to be.
Supe en el mismo momento que conocí a Sofía y Bertrand que tenía que lograr buenos resultados en sus sesiones; sabían lo que querían y tenía que entregar sin falla. Creo que lo conseguí, pero por encima de ello, me divertí mucho haciendo sus sesión de fotografía de bodas, en una boda bien organizada elegante, de buen gusto y con miles de detalles que complacieron todos nuestros sentidos, tales como su catering propio, la hechura de habanos en sitio y los carritos de Tequila frío. Todo obtuvo mi “Like”, como o pondría en a jerga de la Red, el mismo Bertrand. En mi oficio de fotógrafo a veces toca ser como el chambelán, en el sentido alemán Kamerling, aquel personaje, testigo fiel que acompañaba a reyes y reinas en sus espacios privados para escucharles y atenderles. Es en eso que me convierto en los momentos de preparación, reflexión e intimidad de la novia y el novio en los minutos previos al casamiento, pues puedo captar en secreto y con la (re) “cámara oscura” en mis manos, las imágenes sutiles y llenas de sentimiento que llenan la (re)cámara grande donde todo está pasando, para presentártelas a voluntad después. Algo diferente que ser la “mosca en la pared” de Henri Cartier-Bresson. Esto es también lo que sentí cuando hice fotos de los vestidos de Sofía, colgados del cortinero de la recámara prestos a ser utilizados, o de sus momentos de reflexión y foco que la relajaban de una tensión natural o aquellos de alivio a la expectativa que extenuaba hasta que todo unido en santo matrimonio quedó.
