Joy! This is the word that came to me as I did Caro and Jack’s wedding photographs and that keeps coming to mind as I watch them over. It’s joy and open smiles offering frank to each one other. Such an amiable couple and a lovely Maya ceremony by the beach. In all, a wedding in intimacy kept for the bride, the groom, friends and family that attended such a day of rejoicing, in a private white villa with shades of blue and a magnificent staircase of just the right name: “El Secreto”, near Playa del Carmen, in our Mexican Caribbean waters dream of a destination.
Júbilo! Esta es la palabra que mejor describe para mi las fotografías de boda de la sesión de Caro y Jack, cuando las miro de nuevo. Júbilo y sonrisas francas con las que los novios se ofrecían uno a otro. Una pareja de trato fácil y amigable en una bonita ceremonia Maya en la playa. En suma una boda hermosa en la intimidad de los novios, familiares y amigos que resguardó la casa blanca con detalles azules y majestuosa escalera con el adecuado nombre “Villa El Secreto” a unos minutos de Playa del Carmen, a orillas de nuestro Caribe mexicano, destino turístico de ensueño.

Playa del Carmen Wedding Photographer – Blue Venado Weddings – Kacey + Jordan
It may have been the sand. Yes, our white super fine sand in the beaches along our Caribbean coast upon which they stood days before, or that in the sand ceremony that saw Kacey & Jordan getting married. Fact is, they came to witness a friend’s wedding and decided to take that step as well! That’s my definition of braveness, what a wonderful way to do it! And me? I was the lucky one that did their wedding photography at Blue Venado hotel. Wonderful light and a couple so much in love with deeply felt vows plus an unsurmountable location. It was a swift yet unforgettable session! I will remember it.
Pudo ser la arena. Sí, la arena blanca, fina como el talco, de las playas de nuestro Caribe mexicano sobre las que caminaron los días anteriores, o a la mejor fue la arena dentro de las copas de la misma ceremonia que sirvió para que Kacey & Jordan se casaran. Vinieron a la boda de unos amigos y decidieron dar ese paso ellos también; mi definición de valentía! Que linda manera de hacerlo ¿Y Yo? Yo era el fotógrafo de boas suertudo que estaba tomando las fotos en el Hotel Blue Venado donde se celebró. Inmejorable luz y una pareja enamorada que sintió muy hondo los votos que se profesaron, en una locación inmejorable. Fue una sesión breve pero inolvidable.

Underwater Trash the Dress Tulum + Beach Trash the Dress Al Cielo Tulum Hotel + Mallory + Phillipe
A good underwater trash the dress photography session, Mallory and Phillipe dived well. I did not expect less from Californians. Back on the ground and wearing their shades we did a beach session. I loved their being so enthusiastic and playful. Got many nice shots that I expect will see them as they walk their life paths holding hands.
Una buena sesión de fotografía underwater trash-the-dress, Mallory y Phillipe se movían bien bajo el agua, nada que no esperara claro de unos californianos. Ya de nuevo en tierra forma y con sus lentes oscuros, hicimos una sesión de playa. Me encantó su entusiasmo y disposición jugar con la cámara. Obtuvimos muchas tomas maravillosas que deseo les acompañen en sus Caminos de la mano.

Tulum Wedding Photographer – Al Cielo Hotel – Mallory + Phillipe
Mallory and Phillipe’s wedding in Tulum was a happy and so very moving photography session for me, in its symbolism and in what went. Mallory gave Phillipe a photo of his dear parents to be remembered as they were. Phillipe’s brother watched over his shoulder, as this strong, tall, martial arts expert of a man, was completely moved by the gesture. It was a pleasure meeting them. Mallory was so straightforward and sensitive and wore a beautiful wedding dress. They were again so touched during the ceremony and then laughter came rushing in. Such a beautiful couple, he came out so loving and proud as the ceremony ended and the afternoon gave way to a joyous family reception.
La boda de Mallory y Phillipe en Tulum, fue algo emotivo para mi tanto por su simbolismo como por lo que aconteció. Mallory le regaló a Phillipe una foto en la que aparecen los padres de él como fueron en vida. Este hombre, alto, erguido, fuerte y experto en artes marciales se detuvo en un sólo gesto emotivo, profundo, mientras su hermano le miraba por sobre el hombro. Fue un gusto conocerles. Mallory fue encantadora y sencilla desde el primer momento. Su vestido de novia era maravilloso. En la ceremonia de nuevo afloraron los sentimientos hasta que la risa a carcajadas rescatara a todos. Una linda pareja de la mano, él enamorado y orgulloso del momento, salió de la ceremonia al terminar la tarde y dar paso a una alegre recepción esa noche.

Underwater + Beach – Trash the Dress – Sofia + Bertrand – Riviera maya – Tulum
Underwater, Sofia is a ballet dancer in mid air, motion-stopped, sublime. In another take she is walking the high wire, dressed in white walking on red, as she starts a married couple life and holds the sign “Bride” in her hand. I just did my job and took the photo of this wonderful instants of the trash-the-dress session. Meantime, Bertrand has gotten into character. He is absolutely blown away, ecstatic, thrilled as if he had stricken gold, diving as a mighty moustache strong-man character, moustache cuff links on and all. We had a blast!
Bajo el agua en el cenote, Sofía era una bailarina de ballet, suspendida en el aire, sublime. En otra de las tomas la ella camina de blanco sobre la roja cuerda floja, emprendiendo su camino de pareja recién casada con su letrero de “Bride” en la mano. Con toda esta magia, yo sólo hice mi trabajo y tomé la fotografía de su sesión underwater trash-the-dress. Mientras tanto, Bertrand se había metido en carácter. Estaba extasiado, lleno de vitalidad. Buceaba de un lado a otro con la energía de un hombre fuerte musculoso y de mostachos, como en los circos, con todo y que los mostachos estaban en sus mancuernas! Nos divertimos en grande!

Playa del Carmen Wedding Photographer – Sofia + Bertrand + Grand Coral Beach Club
The minute I met Sofia and Bertrand I had to get these sessions 100% right, meaning they knew what they wanted and I had to deliver flawlessly. Think I did, but on top of that I had a wonderful time making their wedding photography in a most superbly organised wedding of fine taste, filled with wonderful details, including their own catering service, in-house cigar making, cold tequila shots carts, and much more, all amusing to our senses. My “Like” to it all, as a very happy Bertrand would put it in Web parlance. In my trade I get to be a sort of what in German is referred to a kamerling, that is of an allowed presence within a royal chamber to witness, accompany and listen to the king or queen. In this moments of intimacy, preparation and reflection minutes from getting married, that is what I turn into, and that is what I also get to see and photograph dearly; a kamerling in a chamber holding your secrets in my hand inside another smaller chamber – a camera obscura – to be preserved and presented to you later upon your will. Not your regular Henri Cartir-Bresson’s “fly on the wall” guy. Such was the feeling I got while with Sofia the bride queen, as I made photos of her astounding wedding dresses, her moments of concentration and reflection, those to ease natural tension and those of beautiful but dreading expectation, until everything in holy marriage gets to be.
Supe en el mismo momento que conocí a Sofía y Bertrand que tenía que lograr buenos resultados en sus sesiones; sabían lo que querían y tenía que entregar sin falla. Creo que lo conseguí, pero por encima de ello, me divertí mucho haciendo sus sesión de fotografía de bodas, en una boda bien organizada elegante, de buen gusto y con miles de detalles que complacieron todos nuestros sentidos, tales como su catering propio, la hechura de habanos en sitio y los carritos de Tequila frío. Todo obtuvo mi “Like”, como o pondría en a jerga de la Red, el mismo Bertrand. En mi oficio de fotógrafo a veces toca ser como el chambelán, en el sentido alemán Kamerling, aquel personaje, testigo fiel que acompañaba a reyes y reinas en sus espacios privados para escucharles y atenderles. Es en eso que me convierto en los momentos de preparación, reflexión e intimidad de la novia y el novio en los minutos previos al casamiento, pues puedo captar en secreto y con la (re) “cámara oscura” en mis manos, las imágenes sutiles y llenas de sentimiento que llenan la (re)cámara grande donde todo está pasando, para presentártelas a voluntad después. Algo diferente que ser la “mosca en la pared” de Henri Cartier-Bresson. Esto es también lo que sentí cuando hice fotos de los vestidos de Sofía, colgados del cortinero de la recámara prestos a ser utilizados, o de sus momentos de reflexión y foco que la relajaban de una tensión natural o aquellos de alivio a la expectativa que extenuaba hasta que todo unido en santo matrimonio quedó.

Sofia + Bertrand – Hotel Deseo – Rehearsal Cocktail – Wedding Photographer
In 1940’s Cole Porter’s broadway musical “Panama Hattie”, the hero, a woman character named Hattie, saves the Panama canal from going havoc doing away with a bomb planted by saboteurs in its control room. This is how the movie unfolds, but it starts with her singing in her night club in Panama as men dance on stage with Panama hats tucked to their heads with women. Yes, this Ecuatorian toquilla straw hand woven fresh clear-coloured hat, sold through the Panama Isthmus, is ideal for hot and humid weather, and was exactly what President Theodore Roosevelt wore as he was photographed while on a visit to the Panama canal works in 1906 where the hat popularity rocketed. The same hats that were later a norm for Hollywood movie celebrities as the 20th century started. It was a fine detail of many to find the original pricey hat was also given by Sofia and Bertrand to every guest attending the rehearsal cocktail, while many wore it comfortably for the next two days. The Playa del Carmen event at Hotel Deseo was indeed “One of those fabulous things, a trip to the moon” as the lyrics for “Just one of those things” reads. Sofia did in fact look “sharp as a razor and smooth as a glove” that evening as Ben Blue sings in the “Fresh as a Daisy” score, and yes, “a dance that they [did] do of a true Spanish brew” that late night, not without first watching a video Sofia and Bertrand had prepared for their guests.
En el musical de Cole Porter, “Panamá Hattie” de 1940, la heroína llamada Hattie, salva al Canal de Panamá de destruirse cuando se deshace de una bomba colocada en el cuarto de máquinas por unos espías saboteadores. Así termina el musical, que inicia con una rutina en pista en un cabaret en el que bailarinas con tocado danzan con bailarines de sombrero Panamá, todos en blanco, como apertura para la entrada triunfal de Hattie que es la dueña del cabaret. El clásico sombrero Panamá, producto artesanal del Ecuador que se llama así porque se vendía a través del istmo de Panamá, tejido a mano de la “palma” toquilla, fresco para climas calientes y húmedos, de colores claros, era el mismo que tiene en su mano el presidente Theodore Roosevelt en la histórica foto que le hicieron en 1906 en su visita al Canal y que disparó la popularidad del sombrero en cuestión en todo el mundo. En Hollywood fue un símbolo que llevaban las estrellas del inicio del siglo XX. Precisamente este icónico sombrero fino y original es el que Sofia y Bertrand dieron como detalle de ben gusto a cada uno de sus invitados que acudieron al cocktail de bienvenida y ensayo de la boda, en le Hotel Deseo en Playa del Carmen, muchos de los cuales lo llevaron puesto los dos días siguientes. El cocktail fue algo fabuloso, un viaje a la luna, como dice la canción “Just one of those things” del musical de Cole Porter. Esa velada Sofía lucía atenta, ágil y maravillosa como en la letra de la canción “Fresh as a Daisy”, y hasta bailaron, en efecto, con una pasión “española” en momentos de la fiesta ya tarde, tras ver el vídeo que se presentó de los novios a los invitados.
