It was a pristine day. Inside the little 1587 chapel of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, right in Playa del Carmen, Lorena and Kubechi were getting married and I was doing their wedding photography. They came all the way from the north border state of Tamaulipas, as most of their friends, family and the family priest. The chapel has a wonderful window behind the altar, so it is a bit challenging to expose, specially afternoons. It was a very happy wedding celebration, respectfully relaxed more like a family gathering. That same afternoon Lorena & Kubechi had a beautiful sand ceremony near the XCaret archaeological site, by the sea. Made me think of how the Chilam Balam, the many books Maya account of Maya history, describes XCaret as a place where two linages came together by weddings, as a place of pilgrimage and as a port to embark for Cuzamil (now Cozumel) to worship the deity of fertility, IxChel. I took it there was no other place more blessed for Lorena & Kubechi to get married in.
Era un día prístino. Al interior de la pequeña capilla de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (de 1578), en pleno Playa del Carmen, Lorena y Kubechi contraían matrimonio, mientras yo hacía su fotografía de bodas. Los novios, amigos, familia y el padre que ofició vinieron desde Tamaulipas en el norte del país. La capilla tiene una maravillosa ventana detrás del altar, por lo que hay que exponer con cuidado especialmente por las tardes. Fue una ceremonia alegre y respetuosamente relajada en un ambiente más de reunión familiar. Esa misma tarde, Lorena y Kubechi intercambiaron votos en una segunda ceremonia, esta vez de arena, sobre la playa junto a la zona arqueológica de XCaret. Me hizo pensar en como el Chilam Balam, recuento Maya de varios volúmenes hecho por ellos mismos sobre su historia, habla de XCaret (antes Polé) como un lugar donde dos linajes se unieron por matrimonio, o un destino de peregrinación. También como un puerto de embarque para Cozumel (antes Cuzamil) adonde se adoraba a IxChel diosa de la fertilidad y de la Luna ¿Que otro lugar más bendecido para la boda de Lorena y Kubechi?
